Asking and Giving Directions


The following podcast introduces vocabulary related to asking and giving directions for getting around in Chicago. The difficulty and the complexity of the new vocabulary is appropriate for intermediate level ESL students.

The new words are presented in context in a series of three dialogues which take place between a tourist and Chicago residents. The podcast explores three different types of scenarios for asking/giving directions on the basis of the means used for getting around the city (bus or train, using a cab or simply walking)


Before you listen to the podcast take a look at the vocabulary introduced:

Asking for directions/information

Giving Directions

  • turn left on

  • turn right on

  • go down the street

  • go straight

  • cross

Post Listening Activity
Work with a partner and using the trip planner function at Chicago Transit Authority website. Develop a dialogue using the new vocabulary about the routes that you take every day to school or work.
